Welcome to Biology & Culture!
Welcome to the Course Blog for Biology & Culture, a First-Year Seminar offered at the University of Mary Washington in the Spring of 2009.
The purpose of this freshman seminar is to provide students with a broad overview of different fields within the biological sciences and place the major scientific discoveries within the context of every day life. Students will develop skills in reading, writing about, and discussing scientific literature. The primary goal is to enable student to understand the landmark discoveries of the past and to make connections between those discoveries, the ways in which they affect or lives today, and how they may help to shape our hopes for the future.
The instructor for this seminar is Dr. Jay McGhee.

Dr. McGhee is in his third year as a visiting professor in the Department of Biological Sciences. Dr. McGhee recieved his doctoral degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University in 2006 for his studies on the population dynamics of wild turkeys. While having worked with various taxa, from freshwater mussels to exotic deer species, His current research interests focuses on the habitat selection and population dynamics of local salamander communities. Dr. McGhee teaches Animal Ecology (Biol 322), General Biology (Biol 121, 122), and Freshman Seminar (FSEM100EE). His office is 300 Jepson.
